Brexit is the overarching issue” – Carey on prospect of general election

FINE GAEL TD Joe Carey says the early indications are that this will be a good election for the party in Clare.
Reflecting on tally figures, Deputy Carey pointed to the party’s strong performance in Ennis and the contests in Ennistymon and Killaoe.
“It’s been a good election for Fine Gael. We’re still at the early stages. There have been particularly strong performances from the three candidates in Ennis. We’re at early stages in the other areas as well. In North Clare, we have two candidates in the top four positions and in East Clare we’re in the hunt for three seats there as well. There is a lot of counting to be done and surpluses have to be distributed as well. It’s a very hard one to call. Fine Gael candidates are performing strongly.”
On the party’s overall performance across the country, Deputy Carey said, “The stand out party are the Green Party in terms of the European elections, in how they’ve polled. Fine Gael have done reasonably well there as well. We’ll hold onto four seats but it remains to be seen as well. There are big ballot papers and there is a lot of counting to be done yet. We have performed fairly well.”
Asked about the prospect of a general election in 2019, the Clarecastle man said, “Its hard to know what to say. We’re a minority government. Brexit is the overarching issue. You see in the UK, Teresa May is resigning. There’s going to be a leadership contest in the Conservative Party. Who knows what character will be the Prime Minister after that. I think we need to be mindful of Brexit and the fallout after that and act in the national interest.”
“Fine Gael are in government with our partners, the independents. We are supported on the opposition benches by Fianna Fáil in a confidence and supply arrangement. They have signed up to another budget and I’ll expect that they’ll live up to that commitment they have. But it remains to be seen”.

  1. Anything done to replace the jobs being lost in the Roche close down? Will you just farm out the ex employees to Turas Nua so they don’t appear on the live register?
