Fox News anchor Kimberly Guilfoyle backs the Banner

Fox News anchor Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle whose father hails from Ennis.

FIRST it was the lead writer in The Guardian newspaper that extolled the virtues of Clare hurling, now it’s Fox News that’s in praise of hurling after the Banner County’s thrilling All-Ireland final replay victory over Cork.
“Welcome to the ancient Irish game of hurling, arguably the fastest contact sport played on grass,” said The Guardian. “Sporting combatants playing for love not money, with only helmets for protection, clash with ash sticks while trying to catch a ball consisting of cork wrapped in thick leather flying through the air at a terrifying velocity,” the editorial added.
Fox News in New York got in on the hurling act thanks to Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle, a television anchor with the Rupert Murdoch-owned cable channel, who is second generation Irish.
“I was onto to her about the match,” reveals her uncle, James Guilfoyle, the proprietor of Dalcassian Printers in Ennis.
“She said to me, ‘if you want I’ll mention Clare’s win on my programme on Fox News’.
“She presents a programme called The Five – it’s on at 10pm to 11pm five nights a week and there are five people sitting around talking about the news.
“She talked about the match and Clare winning it with action pictures on in the background. During the piece that lasted a few minutes she mentioned me and my two sisters who also live here in Ennis,” adds James.
Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle is the daughter of the late Anthony Guilfoyle, who hailed from the Market area of Ennis known as Garraunakilla.
He emigrated to America in the 1950s and had the distinction of being in Elvis Presley’s battalion in West Germany after he was drafted into the US Army, while later in life he became hugely involved in San Francisco politics.
“Kimberly hasn’t been over in Clare for a good number of years,” says James Guilfoyle, “but keeps in touch with her family here and it’s great that she brought Clare’s great victory onto the television with her,” he adds.
