Remember High Fidelity, that bit near the end where John Cusack raps lyrical about the science behind putting together a mixed-tape? The thought that goes into each selection, the danger of creating the wrong vibe with a hurried choice, the equal potential for disaster and glory?
Much the same back and forth takes place when creating an independent compilation album. Thankfully, this latest offering from Connolly web-blogger MP3 Hugger leans much more to the glory side than to the disaster.
You may struggle to recognise a single band, yet from the Texan electro-folk outfit Am Syndicate (imaging Lemon Jelly as a marching band), to the wistful wanderings of Ned Collette’s ‘The Country With A Smile’ Indiecater Volume 2 unearths some gems.
My undoubted person height-light is ‘I’m Sorry But I’m Beginning To Hate Your Face’ from US band Eagle Seagull. Maybe cautionary tale, maybe a rom-com farce, or maybe even a manta for the modern lover, it’s a stonker of a tune.
