NUI Galway and Bank of Ireland are delighted to announce the launch of their new affinity credit card available exclusively to alumni, staff and students. Each time an Affinity Card is used the University will benefit, which associates the user with NUI Galway while supporting it financially at the same time.
The new NUI Galway Bank of Ireland Affinity Credit Card was formally launched in September and coincided with the renewal of Bank of Ireland’s exclusive on-campus banking franchise at NUI Galway.
Tom Joyce, Galway University Foundation Executive Director, said: “The proceeds from the uptake and use of these cards marks a significant contribution by alumni to the prosperity of their
alma mater. It is fitting then that the funds will be directed to the NUI Galway Alumni Fund priority projects”.
When you become a cardholder, Bank of Ireland will donate €40 and a percentage of the annual spend on your card to the Galway University Foundation at no cost to the cardholder, and without disclosing any confidential account details. Cardholders can avail of a range of benefits including online and phone shopping, credit limits to suit each individual and cash withdrawal from ATMs.

Almost 600 NUI Galway graduates returned to attend a special annual reunion over the weekend 6-8 June. The Alumni Office issued a worldwide invitation to the classes of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988, and 1998 who attended UCG/NUI Galway. Highlights included a 50 Year Club dinner on the Friday and a BBQ for all six classes by the River Corrib on Saturday night.
The reunion celebrations began on Friday afternoon when the 50 Year Club/Cumann Caoga Bliain were welcomed back to campus for a luncheon in the Aula Maxima in the Quadrangle. Following lunch, a presentation of “1958 - the year that was” was made by local historian Peadar O’Dowd, focusing on some of the highlights of that year, locally and nationally.
The 50 Year Club were taken on a bus tour of the campus which showcased the many new developments on campus since the 1950s. NUI Galway has grown dramatically since 1958 when there were 175 graduates. The equivalent number this year will be in the region of 4,700. The day culminated with a reception and celebration dinner at the Galway Bay Hotel.
On Saturday, at 7pm, the Annual Reunion BBQ for those celebrating 50, 40, 30, 25, 20 and 10 years since graduation took place in the Students’ Union Bar and Áras na Mac Léinn, overlooking the River Corrib.
Reunion weekend came to a close for the Class of 1958 on Sunday with a mass held in memory of deceased graduates in the Chapel of St. Columbanus on campus. This was followed by a farewell lunch in the Quadrangle.
Mr. JB Terrins, Director of Alumni Relations, encourages graduates to come along to Reunion Weekend 2009, “The reunion is a wonderful opportunity to revisit the University, renew old acquaintances and see how NUI Galway has developed over the years. Many people have already booked their places with graduates returning to Galway from across the globe for this event. This annual event is driven by demand from our alumni, who want the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends.”

Over 100 graduates and friends attended the 9th annual Cumann Caoga Bliain event in NUI Galway on Thursday 17th April. The Cumann Caoga Bliain was initiated in 2000 by the University’s Alumni Office and was established to encourage and help maintain the relationship that our senior alumni have with their alma mater. Since its inception this club has grown with more alumni returning to campus each year. All alumni who graduated more than 50 years ago are invited to return to NUI Galway for a celebratory lunch hosted by the Alumni Office. Lunch is followed by a Bus Tour of a vastly transformed and developed campus and lastly, the new entrants to the Cumann Caoga Bliain are presented with commemorative certificates.
This year’s event was attended by alumni whose graduation years ranged from 1939 to 1957. The most senior attendee was Mr Charles McGrath, an engineering graduate from 1939 who travelled from Dublin to celebrate the 69th year of graduation. Also in attendance was former Galway TD Bobby Molloy, BComm 1957.
Almost 100 alumni, from all years and faculties, came together for a reunion on Friday 25th April in the Custume Barracks, Athlone. A buffet dinner, refreshments and music were on offer and the attendees enjoyed an evening of catching up with old friends and meeting new people. They were joined by Guest of Honour, Dr Jim Browne BE 1974, MEngSc, 1978, President of NUI Galway and Athlone native.
The NUI Galway Midlands Reunion is organised with the kind assistance of Commandant Jim Byrne BSc 1978, Custume Barracks.
Two of the foremost jurists in the area of Family and Child Law, The Right Honourable Baroness Hale of Richmond (

The title of the lecture was Family Law in Ireland and the United Kingdom: Common Threads and Divergent Perspectives. The joint lecture focused on three broad themes: the division of assets and the question of ’proper provision’ upon divorce, the position of children, and the role of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms in family law.
Full streaming videos are available in three separate files: (1) the introduction by the President of NUI Galway and the paper of Baroness Hale; (2) the paper of Mrs. Justice McGuinness; and (3) the questions and answers session.
