TONY Considine could be in line for a dramatic return to inter-county management, a year after he was ousted from the top job in Clare hurling amid bitterness and recrimination. Considine is in the frame for the Limerick manager's post made vacant two weeks ago when Richie Bennis was effectively ousted from the position after three championship seasons. Bennis came into the job in a temporary capacity after Joe McKenna resigned in the wake of Limerick's 2-21 to 0-10 championship defeat to Clare in Cusack Park in 2006.
Considine was offered the post in September 2006, but turned it down, before becoming Clare manager in succession to Anthony Daly. Bennis then became Limerick's manager on a permanent basis. Considine's year at the helm in Clare was marred by what became known as ÔThe Davy Fitzgerald' affair. Fitzgerald left the panel in controversial circumstances, while selector Ger Ward also opted out, as did trainer Dave Mahedy. Considine survived a motion of no confidence in May 2007, but at the August meeting of the county board was ousted by 46 votes to 6 after Clare's All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Limerick. Now, the Garryspillane club are on the cusp of nominating Considine for the Limerick job. In 2005 he guided them to victory in the Limerick senior championship. This year Considine is involved with Burgess. The club has reached the North Tipperary championship final for the first time in their history under Considine's watch.
