GARRY MacMahon from Listowel has inherited his father’s ability for telling a story. His father was The Master, Bryan MacMahon, who had strong Tulla connections and gave the world A Lament for Thomas Daly after the great goalman was tragically killed in 1936. Garry himself is no stranger to the drafting of ballads, having given the world A Lament for Paddy Bawn (Brosnan) after the great Kerry footballer got his final curtain call back in 1995. Getting the plug out of the way for my own book (written in conjunction with work colleague TJ Flynn and replete with mighty images from The Clare Champion’s own John Kelly and my partner Shelagh Honan, not to mind the products of raids on the archives of the Clare Express, The Kerryman and Kerry’s Eye) that’s called Princes of Pigskin, it contains chapter and verse about how A Lament for Paddy Bawn was written by Garry as he drove back to west Kerry after the 1995 Munster final in Killarney.
