MY MOTHER hails from a sleepy enough village on the edge of Ireland called Annascaul. It’s in the news this week because the village is basking in the glory of winning the intermediate football championship. Apart from that signal triumph, it has a few other claims to fame that raise the place above the ordinary. Paddy Kennedy put the place on the map in his day – that was 70 or so years ago when he started fielding footballs like no one after him or before him. Don’t take my word for it – Mick O’Connell recently described Kennedy as the greatest of them all. Before Kennedy, Annascaul owed its place on the map of renown and in song and stories to adventurer Tom Crean. He never played much ball, apart from the garrison game on the ice floes of Antarctica during his epic adventures with Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott and company during the first few decades of the last century.
