DAN DANAHER, an old Clare Champion friend of yours truly had a great phrase that burned into the mind over nine years working beside him on Barrack Street. Dan’s phrase could be applied to many aspects of life – in sport, politics and much more. ‘The Wheel,’ Dan said many times in the office and outside it. Sometimes he showed his love of the Irish language by saying ‘An Roth’. Dan was always wont to explain away some about turn or other (when it happened or even well before that) by simply whispering out in barely audible tones – ‘The Wheel’ or ‘An Roth’. The moral of Dan’s world was that ‘The Wheel’ or ‘An Roth’ was always for turning – sometimes it took a circuitous route, but it always came around in its own good time.
