The 19th (7/8/07)
Written by Joe O Muircheartaigh
THERE’LL be fun to be had in Gort and district this week – banter and ball hopping between hurling friends who’ll let on to be foes as the clash of the ash in Cusack Park draws nearer.
Whenever Clare and Galway meet the sliotar is always in the air. It’s the friendship and foe-ship. Foe-ship because with rivalry it’s always healthy to have a bit of enmity in the mix.
Friendship because of the old days of illicit cross-border trade in players. Those guests from Galway who played their part in Tubber, Ballyvaughan and Crusheen history – the Clare folk who went in the other direction to Galway. Hurlers for hire – footballers too.
