YOU didn’t have to be a golf fan to be moved by the jubilant scenes from the Carnoustie links on Sunday evening. The magical sight of the Tricolour fluttering on the breeze over Padraig Harrington’s head did it for everyone in Ireland and wherever green is worn.
People in pubs, parlours and everywhere burst into spontaneous applause as Irish golf finally moved back into the Major Leagues after 60 long years of effort, disappointments and near misses.
After gnashing of teeth, prayers and much more during a rollercoaster day on the links, the old Claret Jug was coming back to Ireland for the first time since 1947.
