The 19th (20/05/08)
Written by Joe O'Muircheartaigh
THERE is a great trade in Turkey when it comes to clothes – cheap imitations of designer labels they may be, but there’s still a voracious demand for these goods at the numerous roadside markets hard by the Aegean Sea in tourist traps such as Bodrum.
If you want it, the hawkers generally have it, or something like it at any rate. So it was with supreme confidence that The 19th boldly headed for the stalls of Bodrum and nearby Gumbet last week.
Marching….
It was all to do with a text from a blueblood back home. A home thought from abroad via Yorkshire. A reminder that Elland Road was coming alive again, so it was a call to arms, a call to all start Marching on Together.
“Leeds v Carlisle,” it said. “Play-off 1st leg live on Sky Sports tonight @ 7.45pm,” it added, before the final rallying call of “Marching on Together”.
It could only have come from Johnny Moroney. And, more importantly there was only one thing to do, or two things.
Find a television with Sky Sports and find a geansaí, seeing as the old heirloom that is King John Giles’ number 10 was carefully folded away, under lock, key and armed round-the-clock guard by a Norman ‘Bite Your Legs’ Hunter lookalike at a secret destination back home.
