January warning not heeded
Written by Gordon Deegan
Clare County Council and the Health Service Executive started a process of damage limitation at the weekend ahead of revelations that both agencies failed to inform the public of increased risk of contracting cryptosporidium from the Ennis public water supply.
Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show that the Environmental Protection Agency warned in January of an another possible outbreak of Cryptosporidium one month before the most recent outbreak where two children fell ill.
The agencies never informed the public of the increased risk and an RTÉ Prime Time Investigates programme quizzed top officials last week on their role in the failure to inform the public.

They still continue to fiddle with the symptoms of this problem but are not addressing the cause i.e. run-off from agricultural slurry/septic tanks. A lot of these problems could be overcome by installing reed-bed systems which would not only solve the problem but would, at the same time, improve the habitat of the environment by increasing the local bio-diversity! What are they waiting for - it will cost money, but whatever they have to do is going to anyway!
