Travellers say ‘there will be no road racing’
Written by Emer Connolly
THE Travellers who will rent land from Clare County Council for their horses have moved to alleviate fears that they will engage in sulky racing along the public road.
John McDonagh and five other members of his extended family have worked with horses for several years. Since they moved to Ballymurtagh in 2000, they have kept their 20 horses in Limerick and west Clare, on privately rented land.
John admits that on several occasions, they did allow the animals onto the site close to their homes. While this was not permissable, he says they did this out of desperation. Now that the provision of a site near their home is imminent, they have pledged not to breach any agreement reached with the county council in future.
