THIS week’s Irish Open is being touted as one of the biggest and best yet. Sadly, the hyperbole isn’t true because the Open championship of Ireland is not what it used to be.
It is true to say that some of the great and good of the professional game will be down the road from Clare in Adare this week, but in terms of A-list players the competition is a pale shadow of the days when the Open under the sponsorship of Carrolls brought some of the biggest names to these shores.
And, shores being the operative word, because the glory years of the Irish Open coincided with the championship being played on links courses. That’s where the Irish Open should always be played – manufactured man-made creations might be ok for the stadium golf pioneered on the USPGA Tour, but not for the Irish Open, just as it wouldn’t be countenanced for the British Open.
