Clare 2-10 - Donegal 0-15 at Cusack Park, Ennis (Ladies Football National League Final Division 2)
When the buzzer sounded, relief spread all through Cusack Park. Clare had held on to win by a single point against a proven, senior team. The win was significant but the manner in which Clare secured that win – fighting to the end, keeping their composure – will provide as much satisfaction as a first league success since 2000.
The difference between these teams? Simple. Clare were more threatening in front of goal.
Despite conceding most of the possession available around the middle, Clare were dangerous and inventive on the attack. Their two first half goals – scored within ten minutes of each other – displayed those sharp instincts. First, after 11 minutes, a super run by Aine Kelly opened the Donegal defence. With space to use, she found Majella Griffin before Aimear Considine wound up in possession before striking the ball to the net.
