A good drive not spoiled
Written by Marty Morrissey
I said it publicly on Sunday night in Logue’s Pub and Restaurant in Ballyvaughan so I may as well put it on the record here as well. My favourite drive in Ireland is from my own home place outside Mullagh and Quilty up by Spanish Point, Lahinch, Ennistymon, Lisdoonvarna and along the Coast road by-passing Doolin on route through Fanore and into Ballyvaughan. About seven years ago I drove the famous Garden Route from  Capetown to Port Elizabeth in South Africa which undoubtedly is truly beautiful but it’s hard to beat as you twist and turn around the windy road seeing the Aran Islands up close and personal with Galway Bay and city providing a perfect backdrop on the horizon.  Morning brightness, greying dusk or even the total darkness of night doesn’t dilute the awesome and unique landscape of the Burren on one side of the road while the tranquil or indeed stormy waters of the Atlantic Ocean lap the coastline on the other. Even though I was slightly behind   time- wise on Sunday evening I still couldn’t resist the temptation of the Coast Road and once again it didn’t disappoint. My great contact and friend in Ballyvaughan sadly passed away seven years ago when he died doing what he loved most and that was playing football.
