AN advert in the press in the past week served as a sharp reminder that the Shannon Airport Authority doesn’t have control over even the most minute items of operating the airport. The notice was seeking tenders from parties interested in operating two news-stores at Shannon Airport. However, four years after the establishment of the Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) through the 2004 State Airports Act, those wanting to establish a bookstore are told not to apply to the SAA but to the ‘Contracts’ section at the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) in Dublin. So if the appointment of a newsagent at the airport is outside the control of the SAA, it gives rise to the suspicion that the more fundamental decisions and actions that will affect the future of Shannon are made away from the airport.
