HOORAY for Boris Johnson, living proof that the diplomatically challenged can still succeed in British politics. RTÉ’s man in London, Brian O’Connell, said of Johnson’s victory in London’s mayoral election that it was the best indicator yet that the Conservative Party had become elect-able again. But there’s more to it than that. For the first time since 1997, a toff who doesn’t hide his upper-class background with a phoney north of England accent and a “passion” for Newcastle United, has won a significant British election. Not that he could hide it if he tried. For people like Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson are placed on this earth to remind us that there still is an England and she is great.
