The Long Dock, Carrigaholt
Written by Cormac MacConnell
HOURS before the opening of the big Maytime festival of oysters and lobsters and music and song, I arrive in Carrigaholt. She is putting on her powder and lipstick like a young girl a-going to a party. Everywhere the façade of the seaside village is being painted, brightened, refreshed for the new tourist season. There is a buzz in the briny air. The action is encapsulated by the sight of a merry-looking man painting the front of the corner Anchor Bar. He looks like a younger Mario Lanza, like a man who can deliver a soaring version of ‘Sorento’. He is efficiently and quickly using a paint roller with a telescopic steel arm. Even as I watch the Anchor Bar becomes as bright as a sailor’s button. The same scenes are being repeated everywhere in sight along the street. A merry-go-round is being assembled on the beachside area out the Kilkee Road. The merry-go-round of this summer begins again around lovely Loop Head.
