Canny’s, Killanena
Written by Cormac MacConnell
BIG Liam Canny sits at the bar of the family pub in Kilanena, up there in the highlands of east Clare, and he’s watching his 17-year-old grandson Eoin pulling a pint. He’s going to be a big man too. Eoin is helping his father Martin on the night, the way Martin once helped out Big Liam when the place was busy like tonight. And the way Liam used help his father William. And, going back to the late eighteenth century when the pub was started, the way William helped founder James.
That’s an awful lot of pints ago. Millions of the ‘mediums’ they used to favour here in the 1940s and ‘50s — God alone knows how many gallons of the fiery whiskey they use to flavour the big occasions. This is a pub with a history. And this is the kind of pub, because of that, thast has a great ‘feel’ to it.  Registration is required to view this content, registration is FREE
