IN THIS Olympic year it was fitting that the crowds turned out on Sunday last to honour Michael ‘Sonny’ Murphy – Clare’s own tragic hero from Olympic Games past who is remembered every year through a 10-mile road race bearing his name that starts and finishes in his native Kilnaboy. Sonny is one of only a select band of athletes from Clare to have worn the green singlet of Ireland in the Olympics – others down the years were Liscannor’s Pat McMahon who competed in the marathon at the Mexico Games in ’68, 100 metres man Neil Ryan from Ennis in Atlanta in ’96 and Marie McMahon in the 5,000 metres at the same Games. Sonny’s story stands apart though, because of the tragedy attached to it. Indeed, the story is magnified by the double-edged tragedy associated with Ireland’s participation in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
