| Working hard but could do better |

I presume it’s the same for students today but when I was in school in Flannan’s, the Christmas and Summer report cards always had the various teachers comments: “fair result for the amount of work he’s doing” which implied I was doing absolutely nothing in that particular subject. “Good at sport” from the Maths teacher meant little Marty was crap at figures and spending way too much time out in the field playing football and hurling while my own favourite was “working hard but could do better” which suggested that teacher thought I was an ok guy, seemed to have a brain somewhere between the two ears but wasn’t really using it. It’s the latter comment “working hard but could do better” that comes to mind when I think of last week’s display by the Clare Minor footballers against Kerry in Cusack Park. Right from the off I want to clearly state this was a good performance by the home side and it gives us all hope and encouragement for the rest of the campaign but in their heart every player will and must say to himself “this is a game we could and should have won”.
