| The passing of a Clare great |

It goes without saying that I am quite proud of my West Clare roots and last Thursday morning was both a proud and sad day. We lost a wonderful man last week who I’m sure is now charming the other souls in Heaven with great tales of Clonbony Hurling and probably giving out medals from his pocket or plastic bag that he carried somewhere in his overcoat. I refer to the legendary Tom Malone. This man was special. Quite simply - a legend. Tom was born in 1915 and lived all his life in Miltown Malbay. He was a visionary in so many ways as his business interests ranged from pubs to dance halls to cinemas. He was a man of the people and for the people and locally was much admired. He loved to see people involved in the community be it playing in the Clonbony Pipe Band he formed in 1936 or wearing the green, white and gold of his beloved Clonbony in either football or hurling.
