YOU can be sure that John Maughan took a fair few calls from Clare in the past week. It was only right that people from football country should think of him by picking up the phone after his trials in Roscommon came to an end amid the boos and catcalls from supporters in The Hyde.
The insults directed at Maughan were a disgrace – a thundering disgrace even, to borrow the famous line from tanked up Minister for Defence Paddy Donegan when having his famous swipe at Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh all those years ago.
Those supporters (albeit that its wrong to call them supporters) should have known better, because even the faintest knowledge of football history would have educated them to the fact of that Roscommon football tradition is more myth than actual hard currency achievement.
