MYSELF, Kevin Myers, Fintan O’Toole and John Waters were sitting around playing Kerplunk when Eoghan Harris sends me a text asking if we wanted to go play a game of five-a-side. Waters, always with the dramatics, cried off, claiming he was still nursing a twisted ankle after Hugh Leonard caught him with one of his trademark late tackles in a kickabout two weeks before. There was a bit of afters too, and Waters was a little shook. He’s useless on the ball, Leonard, but he gets stuck in, especially for a wheezy octogenarian with bad knees. As the marbles tumbled, we all chortled at our unimpeachable positions as the cognoscenti of Irish journalism. O’Toole was in particularly rare form, going onto his Bebo in the early afternoon and flaming Brendan O’Connor’s page with a few choice digs, “U R Gay” being his most cutting.
