GOALS, goals, goals. I’ve been watching lots of goals lately. Screamers, tap-ins, daisy-cutters, speculative efforts from long distance, volleys, diving headers, penalties, scrappy goalmouth scrambles, and set-piece moves perfected on the training pitch. The vast array of possibilities of sticking the ball in the back of the net has been presented to me on DVD and I have indulged in a veritable feast of goal gluttony. It’s been a while since I’ve been so enthusiastic about goals or been exposed to so many in such a short space of time, so allow me to indulge in some misty-eyed reverie. When you’re 10 or 11, and you like soccer, goals are like heroin. You get strung out, hunting down goals from illicit sources, old goals, new goals, goals from foreign places, by players with unpronounceable names, you don’t care, you’ll take anything.
