This week: Being Irish
Written by Zeitghost
THIS week is a tremendous week to be Irish, what with St. Patrick’s Day on the near horizon, the Cheltenham racing festival coaxing most of our most brazen yahoos across the water for their annual pilgrimage, and the indomitable Irish rugby team planning to steamroll our English rivals into the Twickenham turf this Saturday. I am brimming with fevered jingoism, there is green-tinted Guinness practically oozing out of every pore, this rarefied alignment of opportunities to celebrate my nationhood has me ready to die for the country, or at the very least contract a bad head cold for Éire Ann.
We are great though, aren’t we? Everyone loves us and our roguish ways, our rakish wit, our squiffy charms, our highly skilled and motivated workforce and our low rate of corporation profits tax. If the world was throwing a house party, Ireland would be the life of it, prancing about with a lampshade on its head, giving everyone a hearty chuckle, and generally entertaining the top brass countries with our wacky antics.
