Daffy’s Bar, Corofin
Written by Cormac MacConnell
THERE is a solid wall of smiles in every available foot of Jimmy Daffy’s fabled pub in Corofin two Sunday evenings ago, just before the start of the Corofin Traditional Festival. The people  have gathered together to honour one of their own — the balladeer Joe Keirse of Kilnaboy — and the atmosphere is warm, homely, charged with pride. It is the kind of celebration that can only happen in a good pub which has rung with a million good ballads in its time, a trillion jigs and reels.
If this piece is as much about the balladeer as about Daffy’s pub, then that is right and fitting. There are pubs where the singer and the musician are as vital to the ambience as the handles that pull the pints. There is a crucial linkage here. Even the best ballads sound best in a good old bar. The better the bar the better the ballad. And I have heard Joe Keirse several times in action here when I was living in Corofin and again last Sunday night and it is something to stir the soul. That reflects well on all parties involved.   Registration is required to view this content, registration is FREE
