THE SUPER BOWL scarcely caused a ripple of excitement on this side of the Gulf Stream over the past weekend. The Giants and the Patriots on an indoor Arizona carpet just doesn’t do it for people east of Ellis Island anymore.
Once upon a time it was very different. In the ‘80s when there was high, bordering on mass emigration, in a westward direction, the nation seemed seduced by what corporate America had to offer in a sporting sense.
And it wasn’t just in the gridiron game that Americans call football – corporate sporting America also made baseball fans out of the Irish, the Boston Irish in particular.
Those of the J1 Visas or the illegal Irish  working as navvies in Quincy, Dorchester or Brighton districts, or down on the Cape roared as loudly for the Red Sox as they did for their counties of origin on the hurling or football fields.
