BUMPED into Mike McTigue the other day – the monumental sculptor who has secured commissions from near and far where commemorating the great and the good from Irish life down the years is concerned. Whether it’s in politics or sport, McTigue’s sculpting imprint is to be found on many pieces of art around the country. Among the famous people he’s taken his engraving tools to include Charles Haughey and Mike McTigue the boxer who was a champion of the world. The spirit of the nation, as the late Fianna Fáil leader Haughey styled himself, has a connection with McTigue the boxer and his namesake the sculptor. The sculptor is a member of Fianna Fáil, while the boxer won his world Light Heavyweight title in 1923 in La Scala Theatre off O’Connell Street in Dublin. This is the place the Fianna Fáil party was founded four years later. Registration is required to view this content, registration is FREE |
