Patient care at the Mid-Western regional hospital in Limerick is "severely compromised" because of overcrowding brought on by the closure of 24 hour accident and emergency services in Ennis and Nenagh hospitals. That's the view of the Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation (INMO) who have called for an urgent review of services at the hospital. The INMO claims that  45 patients are currently waiting for a  bed at the regional hospitalAccording to the union, an additional 135 beds were required at the hospital as part of a “reconfiguration” of services in the mid west over the last 18 months. The union said it had predicted the closure of beds in Ennis and Nenagh would cause “huge difficulties” for Limerick without the implementation of this key recommendation of the Teamwork consultants’ report. That claim had been rejected by the HSE, the union said in a statement today.

The numbers of burglaries and possession of drugs cases in Kilkee have dropped significantly this year, while serious assault rates have more than doubled.  A meeting of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC) in Kilkee was told last night that incidents of minor assaults and public order incidents have increased this year, compared to the figures for 2009. The figures were presented to Kilkee town councillors by Kilrush Superintendent Gerard Wall. He said that there were three serious assaults in the Kilkee sub-district between January and September last year and this has increased to seven this year. There were 25 burglaries last year and this has reduced to 12 this year. Thefts from shops reduced from three last year to one so far this year. There was one theft from the person last year and none so far this year. There were 13 other types of thefts last year and this has increased to 16 this year. There have been seven drugs seizures so far this year, while there were 14 last year and 28 in 2008.

Customs officers have been given a further three months to investigate the circumstances surrounding a package containing €207,000 in cash detained at Shannon Airport in May. The ruling, at Ennis District Court on Friday, was made despite an objection by the solicitor for a company based overseas which it is alleged owns the money. A package containing €207,000 was detained by customs officers on May 17, after an individual arrived in to the airport from The Netherlands on a private aircraft. Customs officers then went to court seeking a three-month detention period for the cash. This was granted in June. As the three-month spell expired last week, Customs sought an additional three months. However, solicitor Patrick Moylan, representing the overseas company, said he was objecting. Solicitor Caitriona Carmody, representing the Shannon company – to where the court heard the money was being brought – said she was consenting to the application.

Over 20 per cent of Clare-based speech and language patients are waiting more than a year for treatment after assessment. The shock figure of 201 patients waiting more than 12 months for treatment is contained in a HSE Healthstat report that finds that the HSE’s speech and language service in Clare “demands urgent attention”. The Healthstat is the HSE’s own reporting system aimed at identifying areas that are performing satisfactorily and others where shortcomings are present. Its ‘red’ ‘amber’ and ‘green’ marking system has marked Clare’s speech and language therapy service ‘red’.

700 schoolchildren from across north Clare took part in a spectacular visual display at the Cliffs of Moher today as part of the tourist attraction’s campaign to be selected as one of the ‘New7Wonders of Nature’. The children formed a giant ‘7’ on the cliff side and simultaneously released 700 biodegradable balloons, marking the start of the ‘Great Cliffs Balloon Race’.  Each balloon is printed with the ‘Vote for the Cliffs’ logo and a contact message to encourage people who find the balloons to contact the Cliffs. A prize will be awarded to the person who finds the balloon that has travelled the furthest distance.  The Clare landmark was shortlisted in the New7Wonders of Nature competition in July 2009, along with 27 other sites, from over 440 participants representing 220 countries. Over one hundred million votes were cast in a global poll to determine the shortlisted sites.

Clare All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Daly has been reappointed as Dublin senior hurling manager for the next two years, following a meeting of the Dublin County Committee at Parnell Park last night. The Clarecastle man had one year left to run on his current term, and he did not make it publicly known after July's All-Ireland SHC qualifier defeat to Antrim whether he would be staying on. However, a recent meeting with Dublin officials saw him agree a new deal which will see him take charge for the 2011 and 2012 campaigns. Daly was originally appointed in November 2008 and his first season saw the Dubs reach the Leinster final and qualify for the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

The New Miss Clare, Alice Carroll, said she ‘couldn’t speak’ when it was announced that she had won the competition.
“I just couldn’t speak. I had really believed that I knew who the winner would be and when her name wasn’t called as the first or second runner-up, I thought she had definitely won,” Ms Carroll admitted.  The 19-year-old University of Limerick student from Fairyfield, Parteen, says she is looking forward to the Miss Ireland pageant in two weeks time “but I’m a bit nervous about the bikini section so I’ll be doing a lot of pilates and watching what I eat between now and then.” she told The Clare People. It’s been a  mementous few days for Alice, who also started her first year college studies in French and business today.

The board of Shannon Airport had no role in the controversial decision to increase charges at the Clare airport. This has prompted calls for the Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) to secure its independence from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). Last month, the SAA came under fire from local tourism interests and Ryanair over its decision to increase its passenger charges by €1.58 in its first price rise since 2004. However, Shannon-based Fianna Fáil councillor Pat McMahon told troday’s meeting of the council on special policy committee on tourism that the decision to increase passenger charges never came before the board. “It is very disturbing that that is the situation. It makes you wonder why the board was ever set up in the first place,” he said.

One in every 20 Clare households are over three months in arrears with their mortgages and the situation will get worse in the coming weeks when interest only mortgage arrangements come to an end. That’s the view of Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey who says that government is failing to tackle the issue of mortgages arrears and choosing instead to sink taxpayer’s money into bailing out banks. “There are now close to 40,000 households in mortgage arrears, and hundreds of repossessions have taken place in the past 12 months. Close to five per cent of all mortgages are now more than 90 days in arrears, with debts now totaling €670 million,” he claimed. Deputy Carey has called on the Government to immediately introduce changes to bankruptcy laws and more ways of tackling mortgage arrears and negative equity.

Staff are working their last days this week at one of the mid-west’s longest running hotels. The Two Mile Inn is to close on Thursday with the loss of 15 jobs. The business is the latest victim of an explosion of hotel building which has left the area overstocked by more than 600 beds.  Bank of Scotland - the main secured creditor of the hotel - appointed receiver Billy O’Riordan of PriceWaterhouse Coopers to run the hotel in October 2008, and placed it on the market as a going concern. But no buyer could be found in time to save the business from closure. Industry sources say that the opening of the Shannon tunnel, which effectively now by-passes the hotel, along with an over supply of hotel beds in the Limerick area and the age of the hotel itself made it an unattractive prospect for possible investors.

Three thousand Clare people will become citizens of Limerick without any say or vote, if the Government implements the Limerick Local Government Committee (LLGC) Report. When asked if a plebiscite or referendum should be held among the people of Shannonbanks and Westbury on becoming part of a larger Limerick City, committee chairman Denis Brosnan said: “Those people can’t just say for themselves.” And it has also been confirmed that the Clare public will remain in the dark over why the Government-appointed group recommended that part of the county be in future governed by a Limerick authority. This follows the Department of the Environment refusing a Freedom of Information request from The Clare People seeking reports, correspondence and minutes of meetings that informed the committee’s recommendations. The Department has concluded that, as the Limerick Local Limerick Committee is not a public body, it doesn’t come under the remit of the Freedom of Information Act and therefore the request from The Clare People was refused. The request was lodged a number of weeks ago in anticipation of last week's publication by Government of the report.

Demand for support provided by Clare Haven to victims of domestic abuse has increased, despite cuts in funding. The service has continued to house abuse victims in other counties, such is the demand for accommodation. Figures obtained by The Clare People show that 91 women and 134 children were accommodated at its refuge during the first eight months of this year. The refuge, which provides accommodation for female victims of domestic, has space for six women and their children at any one time. It is currently full to capacity. According to Clare Haven, the demand for its services has increased significantly over the past two years and this year's figures are similar to those during last year. During the first six months of 2008, 44 women stayed at the refuge, while this increased to 85 during the first half of last year. However, the demand for support for both the outreach support programmes in its centres across the county and the telephone assistance scheme increased significantly this year.

Clare minor hurlers suffered All-Ireland heartbreak in Croke Park this afternoon when they lost out to Kilkenny on a 2-10 to 0-14 scoreline in a thrilling final. Leading by 0-9 to 0-5 at half-time, Clare looked capable of pulling off a surprise victory against a Kilkenny side that was aiming to complete the first leg of a senior/minor All-Ireland double. Within five minutes of the re-start, Kilkenny were back in the game when corner-forward Michael Brennan found the net and he was also instrumental in the second Kilkenny goal when he kicked to the net to level the scores after twelve minutes of the second half. Despite claims that a Kilkenny attacker was in the square before the ball, the score stood and Clare were hit by an injury to corner-back Haulie Vaughan who was stratchered off the field. Although Clare continued to battle to the final whistle and were within a point as the game entered extra time, it was Kilkenny who had the final score of the game and went on to claim the title.

The decline in new car registrations in Clare over the past year has been confirmed in the latest figures from the Irish Bulletin of Vehicle and Driver Statistics. The statistics show a 68 per cent drop in new vehicles registered in the county in 2009.  The figures also show that over 73,000 Clare people are licensed to drive, including almost 7,000 who hold learner permits.

The company behind contentious plans to develop a seaplane base at Mountshannon have dismissed appeals against the plan as ‘exaggerated and misrepresentative’. Earlier this year, Clare County Council granted planning permission to Harbour Flights Ireland Ltd for a seaplane base at Mountshannon that is part of a necklace of stops for the company along the west of Ireland. However, An Taisce, the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, local anglers and residents appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanala. In the submission, consultants for Harbour Flights Ireland state that they have met representatives from the fisheries board on August 11 and are confident they have "addressed all their concerns”.

A 10 year-old boy from Clare, who has ataxic cerebral palsy, is to feature in a documentary on RTÉ television that focuses on people who have overcome barriers in their lives in terms of their disabilities. Jack Caldwell, his five-year-old brother Michael and their parents Emer (Sherry) and John Caldwell, from Deerpark, Bunratty, will all feature in the programme, along with Aggie, a dog acquired by the family last year. Aggie is a stability dog whose aim is to help Jack to progress on a daily basis. Her arrival has dramatically changed Jack’s life in a positive way. Jack’s mum Emer explained the details of his condition. “Ataxic cerebral palsy is a relatively rare form of cerebral palsy. It means he has very low muscle tone. We have to do as much exercise as possible with him to keep him mobile. The symptoms started becoming evident at around 18 months, but it took until he was four to find out what it was,” she said. Jack has developed tremendously well over the years and was boosted by the arrival of Aggie last December.
