With Clare County Council confirming that it is considering the sell-off or outright closure of its Inagh landfill, Limerick County Council has announced that it is to put its main landfill at Gortadroma up for sale. The Clare facility has an annual licensed capacity of 56,500 tonnes while the Limerick centre is licenced for 130,000 tonnes a year and is the biggest landfill in the Mid-West region. The move comes as figures show that waste to be landfilled in the region is to drop by 100,000 tonnes, or 57 per cent, in the next five years.

A 60 year-old Clare schoolteacher yesterday appeared in court charged with committing 14 sexual offences involving a then 15-year-old girl. Thirteen of the alleged offences occurred in two separate rooms of a Clare school between September and November of last year. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was making his second appearance in court on the charges, and is facing nine counts of sexually exploiting and five of defiling the girl. The case was adjourned to yesterday for the serving of a book of evidence. However, Garda Inspector John Galvin sought another adjournment to Shannon District Court on September 16. Judge Joseph Mangan remanded the man on conditional bail to that date.

Clare under-21 hurlers relinquished their Munster and All-Ireland titles tonight when they were defeated by a resolute Tipperary side on a 1-22 to 1-17 scoreline at Semple Stadium. Clare got off to a strong start but Tipperary recovered to lead by three points at half-time. Despite an encouraging start to the second half when they reduced the margin to a single point, Clare could never shake off the home side who managed to retain their advantage to the final whistle.

Shannon Airport is in line for a significant boost if British Airways (BA) goes ahead with plans to further expand its popular transatlantic business class only service to other US cities. BA has been looking at expanding the number of flights it operates from London City Airport following the success of its New York JFK business class service which makes a stop at Shannon to refuel and avail of U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities. A BA spokesman said yesterday: "We had always said that we hoped the service would be profitable by the end of the first year. The service has performed better than we expected and the response has been extremely good. Our CEO Willie Walsh has said he would like to look at the possibility of extending the service to Boston and Washington DC but it has to be looked at yet. If we do, we will probably go through Shannon because the whole service there is unique in several ways," he said.

The waiting list for people in the Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary areas needing outpatient appointments for neurological illnesses has been described as a "national disgrace" by the Labour Party Health spokesperson, Jan O'Sullivan. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed that there are now 2,137 people on the outpatient waiting list with 638 of them waiting three years or longer for appointments. Stating that the present situation was an absolute disaster, Deputy O'Sullivan said that it as made even worse by the fact that people with neurological illnesses needed to be treated quickly.

SIPTU and Ennis Town Council have clashed in the aftermath of a court case concerning a pensioner biting and scratching a traffic warden in Ennis. At Ennis Circuit Court last week, Marcus Kelly (68) of 3 Hermitage, Ennis appeared in connection with the assault of Ennis traffic warden, Martin Ryan at Arthur’s Row, Ennis on July 11, 2008. Mr Kelly was initially convicted in the district court of the assault where he was fined €250 and was last week appealing the severity of sentence. After hearing that Mr Kelly had apologised for his actions, Judge James O’Donohoe imposed the Probation Act, struck out the fine. However in a statement issued after the case, SIPTU stated that there had been a number of assaults on traffic wardens in Ennis and there was an obligation on the council to fulfill its duty of care for all employees to work in a safe environment. "Their failure to do so has caused much upset and anxiety to members in recent times and was a concern in a recent dispute with the employer", the statement concluded.

Respite services provided by the Brothers of Charity at Bawnmore in Limerick for carers in the Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary area will be reinstated from August 16, according to Clare Fine Gael TD, Joe Carey. The service was withdrawn due to lack of funding on June 14. Although the service is to be reinstated, Deputy Carey says he understands there are significant funding shortfalls which could jeopardise the delivery of the essential services. "It is unacceptable that the parents and the clients of this service would be asked to fund-raise for an essential service that should be there as a right for the most vulnerable in our society. This is the reason we pay our taxes, so that government provides these essential services and not waste the tax intake on bailing out banks and developers",he said.

Planning is already under way to celebrate Brian Boru 2014 in Killaloe, following a meeting last week which has started the ball rolling. A floating stage which would move to different areas around the river and lake for performances, the erection of a statue or monument to the last High King, long-boats sailing up the river and a massive marketing campaign were among the many suggestions raised at a meeting to begin preparations for the biggest party the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina will see for a long time.“We need this to be an event which is marketed on an international stage. International branding and marketing are vital if it’s to be a success so we are also planning to meet with Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Development, Clare Heritage, East Clare Tourism and, we hope, Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin well in advance of the date,” said local businessman John O’Shea who organised the meeting for all interested locals last week.

A senior Clare County Councillor has said that the successful conviction of a builder for demolishing a house without planning "should serve as a deterrent to those developers with an a la carte approach to the planning laws". Chairman of the Council's Special Policy Committee (SPC) for Planning, Cllr Martin Conway (FG) was reacting to Judge James O'Donohoe upholding a district court conviction against Patrick Costelloe of Shannon Road, Sixmilebridge  for failing to comply with an enforcement notice. At Ennis Circuit Court last week, Kathleen Reddan of Main Street, Sixmilebridge said she had “four horrible years” since Mr Costelloe demolished a house without planning permission beside her home. Mr Costelloe of Shannon Road, Sixmilebridge was appealing two district court convictions for failing to comply with enforcement orders served on him by Clare Council Council. In two separate cases, the district court imposed fines totalling €3,500 and costs awarded against him of €4,300. Upholding the convictions, Judge O’Donohoe adjourned sentencing to allow Mr Costelloe to find out if there is some prospect of the house being re-instated.

Transport companies in the Midwest are receiving large sums for taxi work without the works being put out to tender, it has emerged. Last week, The Clare People confirmed that the Health Service Executive (HSE) paid over €200,000 to one company in the Midwest, Castletroy Corporate Cabs for services provided during the year. The figures provided by the HSE show that two Clare companies featured in the top five: Clare Taxi Services received €28,249 and Glynns Coach Hire received €19,250. The HSE yesterday confirmed that the work has not been put out to tender.

A study commissioned by Clare County Council has concluded that apart from the area immediately south of the planned pier at Doolin, there will be no significant impact on wave action. The Council plan is currently facing widespread opposition from surfers who fear that the planned pier, in its current form, will damage world class surf breaks at Crab Island and Doolin Point. An online petition “Save Crab Island’ has already attracted thousands of signatures worldwide, while members of the Lahinch-based West Coast Surf Club last week met with north Clare-based councillors to outline their own concerns. However, a 38-page report by Moore Group Environmental Services on the impacts that the planned pier will have on the local environment, concludes that outside the area immediately south of the pier and in its lee, there will be no significant impact on wave action.

The general manager of Shannon industrial diamond manufacturer, Element Six said yesterday that the company has "turned the corner” and that he is “quietly confident” that the firm’s Shannon plant will return to profit this year. Mr Ken Sullivan was yesterday commenting on new accounts filed for Element Six Ltd that confirm the company made a pre-tax loss of $40.4 million (€31.1million) to the end of December 2008.  The losses last year forced the company to introduce a survival plan that resulted in the loss of 207 jobs at the plant. Mr Sullivan said yesterday that 245 full-time jobs were secured through the survival plan and that the company is currently employing an additional 100 contract workers in response to the upturn in business at Shannon.

The opening of the Shannon tunnel by Taoiseach Brian Cowen today will cut around 20 minutes off peak time travel through Limerick City for Clare motorists. Construction work on the €605 million project, which commenced in August 2006, was completed over a month ahead of schedule. The tunnel is the length of five football pitches, with cars tolled €1.80 each way and represents the second phase of the Limerick Southern Ring Road Scheme, connecting the N7 at Rosbrien to the N18 Ennis Road at Cratloe Castle.  The 10km section of new road and tunnel will provide improved access times for commuters to the various industrial estates, as well as access to outlying towns and to Shannon Airport, Galway, Dublin and Cork. Opening the tunnel, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said it was a historic crossing and described it as a key element in the state’s national road infrastructure.

The German man whose body was taken from the sea near Kilkee on Saturday evening has been named as Christian Glinz, a renowned pianist from Berlin. The 45-year-old’s body was recovered from the sea off Kilkee at around 7pm on Saturday, after the alarm was raised when passers by spotted the body floating in the water.  Mr Glinz’s body was taken from the water by Kilkee Marine Rescue and was then transferred to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a post mortem examination. Searches were initially launched after Mr Glinz’s rental car was found abandoned on a country road at Derreen near the Cliffs of Moher on Thursday.

Only two of the five houses at the €2 million Beechpark Traveller accommodation site are currently being occupied, Clare County Council has confirmed.  Two homes at the site have new occupants while the council is considering “qualified applicants” for the remaining three units, Fiona Mooney, Acting Senior Officer of the council’s housing department, stated yesterday.  Beechpark was the site of a major €51,000 refurbishment in April after being extensively damaged by vandalism and arson. Traveller families, who had been living at the site, gave up their homes and moved away shortly after an arson attack in February.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is drawing up a series of actions to address shortcomings in the care of patients at Raheen Community Hospital identified by the Health and Information Quality Authority (HIQA). The HSE-run facility located a short distance from Tuamgraney provides care to 29 patients and in the first HIQA inspection, the authority was satisfied that the residents were cared for “in a safe environment and that their nursing, medical and healthcare needs were being met”. However, the inspector noted that the centre did not meet the requirements of the Health Act 2007. The inspector was concerned about the lack of recent fire drills, absence of a dining room, inadequate communal day space and equipment storage space.

A High Court challenge has been made by two Clare businessmen against Anglo Irish Banks' decision to appoint a member of Nama's board of directors as receiver to a number of their properties. John Declan Flannagan of Doolin  and Gerard Lillis of Kilrush claim that Brian McEnery has a conflict of interest arising from his appointment as receiver over their properties and also being on the Nama board.  The court heard that conflict arises out of the State-owned bank's appointment, last April, of Mr McEnery as Receiver to the properties arising out of loans which are "bound for Nama". The court also heard the appointment raises issues of public law.  The court heard Mr McEnery was appointed in connection with loans totalling some €15m obtained by the applicants from Anglo concerning the Clare properties.

Clare County Council has given the go-ahead for a €5 million National Surf Lodge on the promenade fronting Lahinch beach, despite the concerns of local surfers. Earlier this year, Seamus Carroll lodged plans to demolish the existing McDonald’s amusement arcade on Lahinch prom and replace it with the National Surf lodge. The four-storey plan over ground with one storey below ground level is to comprise of a 29-room activity centre, two retail units, a bistro, a board rental unit and activity centre. The plan also includes an indoor ‘flow-rider’ or wave machine for surfers. Located opposite the Spinnaker development and adjacent to Lahinch Seaworld, the proposal sparked opposition from the Lahinch-based West Coast Surf Club.
