PLAY in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will commence at 6.45am this Thursday morning, with the final group of the day teeing off at 3.50pm.
Among the big draws on the opening day will be home favourite Shane Lowry. Competing in the Pro-Am this Wednesday with All-Ireland winning hurlers Shane O’Donnell, Joe Canning and Cian Lynch, the world number 35 Lowry will be bidding for a first Irish Open title in a decade and will be in action with defending champion Russell Knox and world number 20 Tommy Fleetwood.
This trio are among the early starters, teeing off at 8.40am. Former South of Ireland champion (2000) Graeme McDowell gets underway just 10 minutes before Lowry and the US Open champion from 2010 will play alongside two-time major winner Martin Kaymer and Thorbjorn Olesen.
Other former Lahinch champions — Darren Clarke, who won the South of Ireland in 1990, has an 8.10am start with 2018 Ryder Cup winning captain Thomas Bjorn and Stephen Gallacher, while Padraig Harrington, who won the Irish Close at Lahinch in 1995, will be out at 1.10pm with Ian Poulter and Tyrrell Hatton.
Another match certain to draw the crowds will be the group that includes 2017 winner and pre-tournament favourite Jon Rahm, major winner in South African Louis Oosthuizen, and in-form Matt Wallace from England.
Another major winner in former US Masters champ Danny Willett is out at 9am with Ireland’s Gavin Moynihan and Marcus Kinhult at 9am.
