THE postman delivers. Shane Talty had been tipped to take a seat for Fianna Fáil and the Lahinch man made good on his potential on Saturday night becoming the first candidate elected to the new Clare County Council.
The first time candidate topped the poll in the Ennistymon local electoral area, his 1977 votes easily clearing the quota of 1720.
Surrounded by family, friends and supporters Talty was shouldered high in the count centre as cheers drowned out returning officer Pat Dowling’s attempt to read the results.
Speaking moments after his election, the new member of Clare County Council, described his win as an “amazing moment.”
“It felt fantastic. We had indications since early this morning but when the announcement was made by the returning office and I was surrounded by the team of canvassers and family and friends, it was an amazing moment.”
