Renowned singer song-writer from Armagh, Ben Reel, makes the journey to Clare this weekend to play two gigs as part of a promotional tour for his new album `Land Of Escape’ that features 12 brand new tracks.
He plays the Greyhound Bar in Kilkee on Saturday night at 10pm, while on Sunday he’s in Tom Steeles in Ennis for a 7pm show.
This was the eighth studio album and like the two previous records it was recorded and produced in Ben’s home studio in South Armagh. It is different than the last record with a more alt folk ambient vibe. Since released the album has featured on the RTE radio 1 recommended playlist.
Since his debut album `This Is The Movie’ back in 1999, Ben has reinvented himself from album to album, influenced by different styles of music from rock, soul, blues, alt folk/Americana, country & reggae which fuses all these genres into a melting pot to create a great sound which has become his own.
In a solo career which now spans almost 20 years receiving critical acclaim from radio & press from around the world with numerous high profile TV & Radio appearances like BBC & RTE, supporting names like Jools Holland, Alabama 3, The Cranberries and has collaborated musically with such names as Hal Ketchum, The Blockheads and co wrote and performed with some of Nashville’s finest, David Olney, John Hadley, Sergio Webb, Irene Kelley.
In 2011 Ben played an official showcase at Folk alliance in Memphis TN and in 2013 he toured as double bill with Tommy Womack (Nashville) in the U.S & UK & In 2014 also as double bill with legendary American folk singer/songwriter Eric Andersen in the UK.
In November 2017 Ben was honoured to be asked to perform `On Raglan Road’ at the 50th anniversary commemoration of the famous Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh.
Over the last 10 years Ben has enjoyed successful tours in Ireland, UK, Europe & U.S.A, receiving rave reviews and attracting a growing loyal fan base. The band have graced big festivals such as Hippie Jacks (USA) Haarlem Jazz & Huntenpop in Holland, Robin Hood folk festival (UK), Kilkenny rhythm & roots, Cork jazz festival & Ireland’s premiere music festival Electric Picnic and recently December 2017 the Ben Reel Band played the Musiktan festival in Bilbao, Spain.
