Plans to develop Our Lady’s Hospital in Ennis as a healthcare facility have been lodged with Clare County Council.
The plans, which have been lodged by JJ Enterprises Ltd, are seeking the extension of the planning permission granted for the derelict site in February 2013.
The former asylum has been abandoned since 1992 and a number of failed attempts have been made to see the 18 acre site in recent months.
Councillors at Clare County Council have urged the local authority to purchase the site and develop it as social housing.
The property was offered for auction by BidX1 on two occasions late last year but failed to attract a single bid. It is unclear who is behind the current plan to develop the site as a medical facility.
No businesses trading under the name of JJ Enterprises are currently on the books of the Irish Company Registration Office. A number of companies with similar names are registered in the UK but it is unclear which if any of these are involved in the project.
In documents lodged with Clare County Council, JJ Enterprises describes itself as the ‘perspective purchaser’ of the site.
Planning permission was granted to Duesbury Ltd to develop the site in 2013. Duesbury Ltd was established in 1995 and list John and Allen Flynn as its current directors. Its  planning permission for the site is set to expire next week – on February 14.
The asking price for the facility was cut from €1.25 million just €800,000 late last year. A decision on the proposed extension of planning permission is expected in late March
