Ennis GPs Dr Colum Gavin and Dr John Carney of the Saffron and Blue Medical Clinic have landed the prestigious Ross Ardill Memorial Prize for 2015, awarded by Primary Care Surgical Association.
The prize recognises the management of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers treated surgically at the Saffron & Blue Medical Clinic at the Clareabbey Primary Health Centre.
The UK adjudicators commended the robust treatment pathway, the results-tracking system and the complexity of surgical repairs that were achieved.
The treatment management was shown to deliver significant improvements in patient outcome due to efficient access in a safe clinical setting. The clinical outcomes were comparable to those in a hospital setting and the work presented was seen to provide an evidence base for the effectiveness and value of carrying out this work in the community. As Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers are the most common type of cancer diagnosed in the country, the ability and capacity to treat them in a Primary Care setting in the community is a key element of an efficient public health policy.
For this reason, it is anticipated that the results of Dr Gavin’s clinical work will be among the clinical evidence considered when the National Cancer Control Program finalise their guidelines for the management of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers in the near future.
