THE focus of a group aiming to promote Ennis as a night-time destination continues to be on safety and improving the perception of the town.
That’s according to the Chairman of the Ennis Purple Flag Working Group, Johnny Flynn.
In July, Ennis was endorsed as one of the country’s top night-time destinations after the town successfully retained the Purple Flag. Two years after becoming the first urban area in Ireland to be awarded the Purple Flag, Ennis town centre successfully renewed its Purple Flag accreditation status.
The Purple Flag is an international award which aims to broaden the appeal and improve the standard of night-time destinations.
Speaking after four other towns last week followed Ennis’ lead in achieving purple flag status, Cllr Flynn said, “Ennis having successfully gone through its renewal procedure earlier this year, has been joined by 13 other towns and cities all over Ireland as a destination of excellence in evening and night-time.”
Cllr Flynn explained that in Ennis, the working group have focused their work on promoting Ennis as a safe night-time destination.
He said, “I have recently joined the newly formed Purple Flag Ireland networking meeting in Sligo, where representatives of 10 Irish Purple Flag towns were present. This sort of connection enables great sharing of information, which is hugely beneficial and I was able to pick up some great tips and best practice examples for Ennis’ evening and night-time as well as outline our own successes to others here.”
“Our focus here in Ennis continues to be on safety and perception and we are going to work even stronger with Ennis Gardaí in promoting their successes and the good news stories of Ennis’ vibrant and well-managed evening and night-time.”
In Ennis, the Purple Flag Working Group consists of members from Ennis Gardaí, Municipal District of Ennis, Ennis Chamber, Evening and Night-time business owners and managers and Ennis Taxis. The group meets on a regular basis to discuss issues and advances of Ennis’ evening and night-time.”
