A decision to construct a large burial ground and Clare’s first crematorium at Clarecastle has been turned down this morning by councillors at Clare County Council. After a lengthy debate, councillors voted 15 to 11 against a proposal for a material contravention of the Clare Development Plan which would allow zoning for the site to be changed from residential.
Before the vote, CEO of Clare County Council Tom Coughlan, stated that if the councillors voted to grant the rezoning planning permission would almost certainly be granted.
A large crowd packed the public gallery during the debate which lasted for nearly an hour. This decision comes just four days after a proposal for a crematorium in Shannon was also turned down by Clare County Council.
