Units from the Irish Coast Guard are tonight searching the river and the Post Office field in the town centre.
Emergency services received a report around 9.30pm that a person entered the river near the Parnell Street car-park.
A helicopter and the Clare Fire Services were also involved in the search.
No person has been found and it has not been confirmed that a person entered the water. Coast Guard teams are still in the area.
