Podge clear for footballers game against Carlow

DUAL star Pádraic Collins will be available to the Clare footballers on Sunday for their crunch National Football League tie against Carlow in Cusack Park.
News that the All-Ireland winning hurler and All Star, who is expected to recover from a hand injury, will be released to play football this Sunday is a huge boost to the county’s chances of securing the win they need to keep their dream of promotion to Division 3 for 2014 and a Division 4 final in April alive.
Speaking to The Clare People, manager Colm Collins says “to the best of my knowledge” his two sons Pádraic and Sean Collins will be available for the footballers in their must win game.
“What’s facing us is simple,” says Collins. “We have to win our last two games and it starts with getting our two points against Carlow on Sunday.”
“The first thing you’ve got to do is go out and win the match and then be as efficient as we can then,” he says. “We have to be as tight as we can defensively and try and do the best we can in attack. The important thing is to never lose sight of the fact that the main thing is to win the match,” he adds.
At the same time the Clare hurlers will be unbackable favourites to win their league quarter-final against Laois – a team they beat by 1-32 to 0-15 in last year’s All-Ireland Qualifier.
However, manager Davy Fitzgerald is taking nothing for granted against the Division 1B surprise packets. “I’m just happy that we’re in a quarter-final but next week is going to be a tough one,” he says.
“Our objective in the league was to stay up and we’re delighted with that but I’m not looking forward to next Sunday because they [Laois] will be throwing the kitchen sink at you and when I look at Laois, I think of the results they have had over the last number of weeks.
“They have ran Cork and Limerick very close and were unlucky not to get one or two big results. So we know we are in for a game but we’ll enjoy today and get ready. Trust me, we’ll have to get up again for next week,” he adds.
