Avenue United A 8 – Tulla United B – 0 at Lees Road, Ennis
TEN times champions Avenue United had it all their own way on Sunday morning as they hit hapless Tulla United B for eight goals in the most one-sided Clare Cup contest of the day.
Tulla’s second string may be pushing for promotion in Division 3 of the league as they chase runaway leaders Treaty Celtic, but taking on Premier Division bluebloods was a step too far for them as they were on the receiving end in both halves.
Avenue split the scoring between both 45-minute periods – banging home four in each half as they cruised into the third round at their leisure with the mercurial Mikey Mahony being their inspiration.
Mahony bagged the first three goals of the contest to kill the game inside the first 30 minutes. His opener came after only five minutes while he followed up with further strikes on 20 and 30 minutes, while Barry Nugent made it 4-0 on the stroke of half-time.
The floodgates remained open in the second half, albeit Avenue had to wait until the 70th minute to add to their total when Scott Hennessy grabbed the first of his two second half goal.
Hennessy closed the scoring with another in the 90th minute, while before that Nicky Twumasi and Eamon O’Reilly had got on mark with goals in the 77th and 84th minutes respectively.
