He is one of Clare County Council’s longest serving members, has topped the polls in the last four county council elections and tonight Cllr Christy Curtin (Ind) was elected as mayor of the county. Those members that paid tribute to the Miltown Malbay man agreed that the honour was long overdue. Fellow Independent councillor Patricia McCarthy nominated Cllr Curtin at the council AGM for the position. Seconded by fellow west Clare councillor and brother-in-law Cllr PJ Kelly (FF), the new mayor was unanimously elected unopposed. Meanwhile Ennistymon area councillor Michael Kelly (FF) was unanimously elected as deputy mayor, following a nomination from Cllr Richard Nagel (FF) and seconded by Cllr Michael Hillery (FF).

As an Australian cousin a few times removed from Cllr Curtin, may I congratulate him on his elevation to the office of Mayor. We have common ancestory by the name of Clancy, my great grandmother Bridget and her brother Patrick Clancy coming to Australia in the 1800s. So I'd like to give a typical Aussie greeting to my Irish cousin - "Good on ya, mate!"
Cheers
